- A treasure chest is a recurring element in Dragon Quest games as well as most role-playing games. It appears in various locations throughout the games and often contains an item or gold which the player receives upon opening the chest. Beginning in Dragon Quest III some chests are traps which contain enemies such as a Cannibox. Generally, treasure chests are used to distribute items throughout the locations in each game.

- A Treasure Chest, or simply chest, is a gameplay mechanic common to role-playing games. They are typically much-sought objects that contain precious items. Chests can come in a multitude of shapes and sizes, and may carry extremely different contents from one to another. For instance, you might find a healing potion in one, or a piece of equipment in another. Some chests may even be booby-trapped, or summon monsters when opened.

- When a chest is opened you will randomly receive either a single treasure item, which will be placed in your treasure pool; some gil, which will be split amongst your party; or a key item, which can only be obtained by the character that opens the chest. Treasure items can include gems, armor, weapons, quest items; which will only be obtained if the quest is active, and maps; which can only be obtained once. Quest items take first priority when receiving items, with maps taking next-highest priority, and all other items taking last priority.

- On the website and in game, you can watch your current amount of chests. Unlike presumed, you have to pay 499 Funds for a key in order to open them.
