The show became darker and more adult with a gothic atmosphere influenced by Hammer horror films. The horror influence is obvious in stories like Planet of Evil, Pyramids of Mars, The Brain of Morbius, The Hand of Fear and The Talons of Weng-Chiang, all of which rip off "pay homage" to well known horror novels and movies.

  • Philip Hinchcliffe war von 1974 bis 1977 als Produzent der Serie Doctor Who tätig. Folgende Episoden entstanden unter seiner Produzententätigkeit: * The Ark in Space * The Sontaran Experiment * Genesis of the Daleks * Revenge of the Cybermen * Terror of the Zygons * Planet of Evil * Pyramids of Mars * The Android Invasion * The Brain of Morbius * The Seeds of Doom * The Masque of Mandragora * The Hand of Fear * The Deadly Assassin * The Face of Evil * The Robots of Death * The Talons of Weng-Chiang
  • On the DVD commentary for The Robots of Death, Hinchcliffe recounts that one of the perks he had as producer was picking out which coat Tom Baker would wear in each story. Hinchcliffe had a young girl living next door who was a fan of the show, and once asked her which of the characters the girl identified with the most. He was surprised when she answered "The Doctor" instead of "Sarah Jane". This made him decide that the next female companion should be more pro-active and action orientated, resulting in the creation of Leela.
