The United Kingdom general election of 1978 was held on the 7 of July 1978 to elect 635 members of the House of Commons. The Labour Party led by James Callaghan, trounced the Conservative opposition led by Margaret Thatcher. The previous Parliamentary term began in October 1974 when Labour's then leader Harold Wilson managed to scrape through a majority of a mere one seat. Unstable, his government staggered through a period of high inflation and increasing unemployment and he later resigned on the 5th of April 1976. Leaving James Callaghan to manage an unstable majority in parliament threatened by the prospect of a motion of no confidence. The previous Parliamentary term began in October 1974 when Labour's then leader Harold Wilson managed to scrape through a majority of a mere one seat. Unstable, his government staggered through a period of high inflation and increasing unemployment and he later resigned on the 5th of April 1976. Leaving James Callaghan to manage an unstable majority in parliament threatened by the prospect of a motion of no confidence. However, by spring 1978 the economy was improving and the inflation rate had decreased to single digits and unemployed eased to a rate of 5.2%. Taking advantageof this, Callaghan dissolved parliament hoping to make good use of the economic improvement.The Conservatives pledged to return the economy to high growth using free-market philosophies to achieve this. This was however, loosing support among middle-class voters concerned her uncompromising anti-unionism would lead to a similar state of affairs under her predecessor Edward Heath. With this bearing in mind, the electorate rejected her radical manifesto giving Labour a small workable mandate.
