  • Nick Gorczany was the founder and sole owner of Gorczany Industries. He was about 35, very blond and putting on weight. The company made various "widgets" which were sold to other companies to incorporate into their own products. Gorczany's company was quite successful and he lived on an acre and a half in Palos Verdes and bought himself a new BMW each year. One of Gorczany's employees was Vanessa Ferguson, whose job title was technical writer but viewed her position as "hired keyboard". She thought him an idiot because of his poor writing and grammar but since he was the boss, she was forced to do things his way. One day, his insistence of using "between you and I" instead of the grammatically correct "between you and me" in a business letter brought her to a boil. However, Gorczany thought "me" made him look like a yahoo and so insisted on "I". With barely concealed rage, Ferguson changed the letter back to "I", printed a new copy and gave it to Gorczany for his signature. Ferguson's dissatisfaction led her to quit her job when Hagop Nersessyan indicated he was moving to Denver and follow him there. Three and a half years after the Yellowstone Supervolcano had erupted, Ferguson managed to get back to Southern California via a refugee camp in Arkansas and reclamation work in Kansas and was re-hired by Gorczany. He had recalled her skill as a writer but had forgotten her prickly personality. Ferguson quickly reminded him of that but he kept her on.
