(TNG: "Up The Long Ladder" ) In the 23rd and 24th century, the United Federation of Planets continued to use the prefix to register a variety of vehicles and installations, including shuttles, operated by Starfleet and the independent Pentarus system. They were also used in the registries of spacedocks and starships that carried out missions for the Starfleet Advanced Technologies Division and affiliated with organizations such as the Federation Council on Exobiology and research vessels operated from starbases. (Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country; Star Trek Generations; TNG: "Conspiracy" , "Hero Worship" , "Final Mission" ; VOY: "The Raven") According to Rick Sternbach, the NAR prefix indicates "Merchant-type vessels," further stating that the meaning behind its use "goes back to Mike and me and others in the National Association of Rocketry."
