Michael Edward Baumgartner (born January 30, 1949 in Roseau, Minnesota) is a retired ice hockey defenseman. He played college hockey for the North Dakota Fighting Sioux from 1967 until 1971. He was chosen 60th overall by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 1969 NHL Amateur Draft. Baumgartner turned pro with the Dallas Black Hawks in 1971-72. In 1973 he was traded ot the Atlanta Flames and in May,1974 was sent to the Montreal Canadiens. But it was not until he was traded to the Kansas City Scouts in August, 1974, that he got his first crack at the NHL.

But it was not until he was traded to the Kansas City Scouts in August, 1974, that he got his first crack at the NHL. In his 17th game as a Scout, Baumgartner was struck on the eye by a slapshot. A scar formed and his eyesight was affected. His season was over. During the offseason he hoped to make it back. After 1975 training camp he was assigned to the Springfield Indianswhere, in his first game back, he broke his nose! After being sent to various doctors Baumgartner decided to retire.
