- The unit was formed unoffically in 1970 by Big Boss and Roy Campbell who were both prisoners of the incident at La Peninsula de los Muertos. The two formed the outfit in order to rise up and fight against the rebelling members of FOX, and clear the names of Big Boss, Major Zero, Para-Medic and Sigint, who were all members of FOX. After the incident, FOXHOUND was officially disbanded with no successor unit named or known.
- Although its function changed over the years, FOXHOUND specialized in covert, solo infiltration, to cope with local revolutions, regional complications, and global terrorist activities in "unauthorized" combat zones too politically-sensitive to intervene through conventional means. Its agents were also trained to complete various missions that were assigned in secret, to the extent that they were considered the modern versions of the ninja. All its members were battlefield hardened veterans, with many coming from a mercenary background.

Das damals verwendete Foxhound-Emblem war Komikhaft. 2005 lehnte sich eine aktive Foxhound-Einheit auf der Insel Shadow Moses auf. Dieses Ereignis wurde als Zwischenfall von Shadow Moses bekannt. Ein ehemaliges Foxhound-Mitglied, Solid Snake schlug den Aufstand nieder. Die Einheit wurde daraufhin aufgelöst. Foxhound blieb seit dem Zwischenfall von Shadow Moses inaktiv. Die sogenannte Foxhound Organisation, zu der sich Raiden zugehörig fühlte, existierte lediglich virtuell als eine von den Patriots geschaffene Illusion, um den S3-Plan einzuleiten.
