Synopsis
  • A guard notifies Hal of Willie's fate, and he rushes to meet his friend. On the way, however, Sinestro arrives, insisting that Hal forsake his friend and continue his training. Hal is reticent, but Sinestro forces him into his Green Lantern Uniform, explaining that his home planet of Korugar may be in trouble.
  • One day, as Willie is mopping the halls of the prison, he overhears the same inmate that had attacked him talking with another, explaining that he knows Hal is the Green Lantern. He declares his plan to steal the ring, and break out of prison. Unfortunately, Willie drops his slop bucket, and he is found out. Despite Willie's pleas, he is attacked with a shiv.
  • Later, in the mess hall, Hal realizes that Willie is more famous than he thought, having been a frequent inmate as a gentleman thief. Willie becomes involved in an altercation with another inmate, after accidentally dumping his food tray on his lap. Hal intervenes on Willie's behalf, but his use of a certain phrase alerts the attacker to the fact that they have met before. Hal had busted him just days ago as Green Lantern. The guards attempt to drag both the attacker and Hal away, but Guy Gardner arrives just in time to save him. Guy isn't keen on Hal's friendship with a revolving-door criminal like Willie, but eventually he offers to take on Willie's case in addition to Hal's.
  • When they arrive on Korugar, Hal is disturbed by the fact that the citizens obviously worship Sinestro. But as they fly over the capital city, they are shot down by the Korugarians themselves.
  • Later that night, Hal and Willie are surprised by the appearance of Sinestro, who has returned to give Hal more training. When he sees Willie, Sinestro decides that the best course of action is to perform a mind-wipe on him, but Hal manages to convince the Lantern to leave his friend alone. Over the next several days and weeks, Hal and Sinestro train in space, while Hal deals with the challenges of living in a maximum security prison.
  • After surprising his new cellmate Willie, Hal Jordan sees no alternative but to reveal his identity and tell his story. Willie is surprised, but accepting. An exhausted Hal goes to sleep, leaving Willie eyeing his Green Lantern Ring. Willie struggles with whether or not to steal the ring, but moments later, the wake-up alarm rings , and Willie plays it off.
quotation
  • A Friend! I am your only friend, Hal Jordan. Because I - alone - will prepare you for the life ahead of you. Remember that!
