  • A pole weapon or polearm is a close combat weapon in which the main fighting part of the weapon is placed on the end of a long shaft, typically of wood, thereby extending the user's effective range. Spears, glaives, poleaxes, halberds, and bardiches are all varieties of polearms. The purpose of using pole weapons is either to extend reach or to increase angular momentum—and thus striking power—when the weapon is swung.

Notes:
  • A polearm is a large two-handed edged weapon, usually in the form of a long metal or wood pole a bit taller than a person, with an axe-like head. Polearms are the least common of all melee weapons. Names such as Pike, Spear, Halberd, and Harpoon all indicate a polearm. Sometimes a polearm will have a spear-like point or mace-like protrusions, but in combination so as to not qualify as a spear and too long a handle to be a mace. Polearms generally attack very slowly, but cause large amounts of damage on a hit. Polearms can be used by monks, hunters, paladins, warriors, druids, and death knights.
  • Polearms encompasses both the Warrior skill and the weapon class it enables one to use. All polearms are mended with an oilstone. Practicing this skill gives residual practices to Lances, Spears, and Javelins.
  • The Polearm is a combo weapon in Dead Rising 3. The combo weapon is described by the Official Xbox 360 magazine as: "A variation on the spear-type weapons from previous Dead Rising games, Dead Rising 3's Polearm - spotted in the introductory video for Machinima's Xbox One Wingman app - looks considerably more deadly, owing to the additional pointy bits attached to its jabby end. The polearm is a nimble weapon, ideal for confronting more agile human enemies like Zhi, the murderous Buddhist monk. The same Machinima video also advises you to collect a Lone Blade book, which will boost a weapon's durability."
  • Japanese polearms: * Naginata: Long-bladed slashing polearm.
  • Polearm / Spear is a weapon that can be equipped by Garland, Firion, Golbez, Bartz Klauser, and Sephiroth. Other characters can only use a Spear if they trade a Dragoon Lore Accessory to the Shop and pay 1000 gil to learn Equip Spears, and equip it. Spears specialize in adding Wall Rush BRV Damage, changing the percentage done from 20% upwards to 50%. The downside of Spears is the DEF-1. The Japanese letter to recognize a Spear is 槍.
  • Polearms extended a warrior's reach, keeping his opponent at bay and remaining out of reach of their weapons. It was practical when equipping infantry to stand against mounted opponents, bracing a polearm against the earth and pointing it toward oncoming riders.
  • Polearm is a constitution based weapon proficiency used when fighting with pole weapons. * +1.5 to hit per level * +0.1 damage multipler per 10 levels
  • A polearm is literally a weapon on a pole. There is an abundance of polearm types in NetHack. This is another feature of the game that echoes early editions of the Dungeons & Dragons games, which were infamous for giving stats for many exotic polearms, while describing none of them. Monsters will attempt to use polearms in the following order: halberd, bardiche, spetum, bill-guisarme, voulge, ranseur, guisarme, glaive, lucern hammer, bec-de-corbin, fauchard, partisan; and so this list is roughly from best to worst.
