In 1923, Alfred and Edna became parents to a daughter, who they named Joyce. However, shortly after birth, Joyce contracted scarlet fever and died. Edna also contracted the disease and died a few months later. Alfred then moved away from Weatherfield and became a station master on the Liverpool Road line, moving into a cottage. In 1936, he married Edith Brown and they produced a daughter, Valerie, in 1942.
