In 1926, Joan Teal accompanied her parents, Marion and Professor John Teal, on an expedition from Kolumbi, Africa to the heart of the jungle. The Teal family was seeking radium, hoping to use it to help mankind. However, the Togoma tribe that guards the radium-filled pit of death attacked and killed most of the expedition, including Joan's parents. But the witch doctor, Gooma, decided to spare the child, renaming her Jun-Gal and raising her. Gooma later died and left leadership of the tribe to Jun-Gal. Mogam, son of Gooma, tried to kill Jun-Gal to gain leadership of the tribe, but he was caught and fell into the pit of death during pursuit. Jun-Gal then continued to protect her tribe from any evil that threatened it. Due to exposure from the pit's radiation, Jun-Gal gained superhuman stren
