Shelagh Foyle was the daughter of Tommy and Elsie Foyle, who ran the Corner Shop. Shelagh was born in 1935. During the Blitz, Elsie took her daughters Hilda and Shelagh to Blackpool until the bombs stopped. Shelagh was bullied at school and entertained the idea of pursuing a singing career but decided not to when during her first performance the men in the audience jeered at her and made obscene remarks. Choosing a job in the canteen at Elliston's Raincoat Factory alongside her sister instead, Shelagh left the shop in 1957 to work at a girls' boarding school in Surrey.
