The 1956 VII Winter Olympic Games was hosted by Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy. This would be the first time Italy had ever hosted the Olympic games. They would later host the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Torino and the 1960 Summer Olympic Games in Rome. Cortina d'Ampezzo was originally meant to host the 1944 Winter Olympics, but they were canceled because of World War II.
