Natal was annexed by the British Empire along with Cape Colony in 1806 when the East India Company went bankrupt. Natal was was already home to several indigenous Amerindian tribes when the Portuguese arrived, and was subsequently settled by the Dutch (the Burghers), the British, and large numbers of West Africans imported by the early settlers as slaves. The island became a Crown Colony in 1921 and was granted full independence on January 3, 1955. Natal today is a diverse country and one of South America's most dynamic economies.
