The Reichsnachrichtendienst (English: Imperial Intelligence Service), known in Germany as the RND, is the foreign intelligence service of Germany and is one of the largest intelligence agencies in the world. It was formed officially by the Reichstag Intelligence Act of 1948 and since 1959 has been headquartered in Potsdam, roughly 24 km from Berlin. The RND took on a prominent role in covert warfare during the Cold War, battling the MSI in counterintelligence, paramilitary operations and espionage.
