At the end of "Undue Process", Natalie Lambert visits the grave of her goddaughter, Cynthia Lambert Luce, where she places flowers by Cynthia's headstone. Cynthia was kidnapped by Ronald Gault, a child molester who murdered her. Natalie, who had been stalwart in the search for the missing child, is taken off the murder case by Captain Cohen, who recognized an impossible conflict of interest. Nevertheless, when she suspects that the pathologist who replaces her is mishandling the case, Natalie decides to investigate on her own, and proves able to maintain her professionalism despite knowing the victim.
