Dr Nicholls was a compensation doctor who interviewed Les Battersby in December 1998. Les had been admitted to Weatherfield General with osteomyelitis and had helped himself to more painkillers as Martin Platt had left the drugs trolley unlocked and unattended whilst attending to a patient who was suffering from a heart attack on the ward. Les was found unconscious and had to have his stomach pumped, but upon recovery Les was adamant that he didn't touch the tablets and that Martin had tried to kill him.

After Dr Nicholls had been given case notes from solicitor Neville Green, he encouraged Les to act more "affected" by his "experience" and in order to win compensation, Les would have to play up to the courts.
