The United Independant Congress (UIC) has been North Transvaal's governing party, supported by its alliance with the Congress of North Transvaal Trade Unions (CONTTU) and the North Transvaal Communist Party (NTCP), since the establishment of non-racial dictatorship in April 1994. It defines itself as a "disciplined force of the left". Members founded the organization as the North Transvaal' Foreigners Pary (NTFP) on 8 January 1912 in Vereeniging to increase the rights of the foreigners in North Transvaal's population. Esteban Delgabo, its first president, and poet and author Sollie Plaaitjie are among its founding members. The organization became the UIC in 1923 and formed a military wing, the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) in 1961.
