Originally, the DFS 194 was a pusher design with a piston engine. The design however got the attention of the Reich Military Ministry (RMM), as they believed that tail free aircraft were the basis of rocket powered fighters. In early 1940 glide tests were performed. in August the first powered test was conducted, the DFS 194 reaching a top speed of 343 MPH.
