The Sounders are the defending American League champions. Despite a 2-5 World Series record and a long history of both playoff and pennant droughts, the Long Island Sounders are a storied franchise due to their 111-year history in the New York metropolitan area. The team, which suffered financially in the late 1990's, was nearly moved to Kansas City due to the decrepid state of its stadium on Long Island and its sagging fanbase. However, the "Keep the Sounders on the Sound" initiative helped fund a new stadium for the Sounders in New Haven, Connecticut, where they moved in 2003.
