Raphael Thuron was captain of La Petite Marie, and brother to Father Mattieu Thuron. He was born to a peasant family in Arcachon, France. Not wanting to continue the poor life, Thuron ran away and joined a merchant crew, eventually drifting from ship to ship until he acquired his own. When he first met Ben and Ned, he confessed that he wanted to return to Arcachon, and start a new life away from piracy. Raphael Thuron died and went down with his ship during a battle with the French Navy. He claimed to have at one time been a gunner on a Red Sea corsair ship, the Star of Sudan.
