Side control is any control that has the controller's body perpendicular to and on top of the controlled. These are the most common kinds of positions to use after passing the guard. To avoid being put back into the guard the hips of the recipient must be controlled. This control is achieved by Elbow Knee, Pinning the shoulders, or holding one of the bent legs inside the elbow in a cradle.
