According to legend, Kaldi was the Ethiopian goat herder who discovered the coffee plant. In the myth, Kaldi noticed that his herd of goats became very energetic and restless after they would eat the red berries from a certain bush. This prompted him to try the berries for himself, but when Kaldi took them to an Islamic holy man at a monastery, they were disapproved of, and thrown into the fire. However, the aroma that emerged from said fire was so enticing that the roasted beans were taken from the embers and dissolved in hot water. That was the first cup of coffee.
