She served in the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and provided escort service against submarine and air attack for Navy vessels and convoys. She was named in honor of Lieutenant Commander Hilan Ebert whose ship Northampton (CA-26) was torpedoed in the Battle of Tassafaronga off Guadalcanal. Gibbs, USNR, in command.
