| - Dengue Fever is a Californian band whose music blends psychedelic pop and 1960s-era Cambodian rock. In 2001, the two brothers Zac and Ethan Holtzman took a trip to Cambodia, where they were struck by the local music scene. Upon their return to the US, they started a band with recently-arrived Cambodian singer Chhom Nimol as lead vocalist. Paul Smith joined as drummer, David Ralicke on brass instruments, and Senon Williams as bassist. Their first album, the self-titled Dengue Fever, released in 2003, was sung entirely in Khmer and included several covers of 1960s Cambodian rock hits.
- Dengue fever is a viral disease caused by the dengue virus. It is spread through the bite of mosquitos and attacks the body's white blood cells. In 80% of people exposed to it, it resolves itself after causing only a slight fever. In 15% of patients, it also causes a rash accompanied by aches and pains of the muscles and joints. It is endemic and epidemic in much of the tropics, but the virus exists in the wild in many other tropical areas.
- Some cases develop much milder symptoms, which can, when no rash is present, be misdiagnosed as a flu or other viral infection. Thus, travelers from tropical areas may inadvertently pass on dengue in their home countries, having not been properly diagnosed at the height of their illness. Patients with dengue can only pass on the infection through mosquitoes or blood products while they are still febrile.

The classic dengue fever lasts about six to seven days, with a smaller peak of fever at the trailing end of the fever (the so-called "biphasic pattern"). Clinically, the platelet count will drop until the patient's temperature is normal. Cases of DHF also show higher fever, haemorrhagic phenomena, thrombocytopenia and haemoconcentration. A small proportion of cases lead to dengue shock syndrome (DSS) which has a high mortality rate.
In the remaining 5% of patients, the disease is serious and life threatening. It causes a very high fever, a widespread rash, bleeding of the mucous membranes, leading to edema which reduces the volume of blood, causing organ damage, shock and widespread hemorrhage. About 26% of patients who reach this stage will die of the disease, although the mortality rate drops sharply with treatment. Unlike many diseases, it is more likely to be severe in younger people, and particularly healthy and well fed younger people. It also tends to be more severe when the patient has another underlying condition such as asthma or diabetes. There is no vaccine against dengue, so prevention is directed at keeping mosquito populations low. Even in very sick patients, treatment is supportive as the disease will run its course in about seven days. Most patients only need to drink fluids, but sicker patients may need intravenous fluids or transfusions. Invasive procedures must be avoided due to the risk of bleeding. Acetaminophen is used to treat the pain and aspirin and ibuprofen have to be avoided as they will often make the symptoms worse. Fluid levels must be checked as during the recovery phase, patients may retain fluids as they flow back into the bloodstream.

In 2005, the band went on a tour in Cambodia, which was recorded in the documentary Sleepwalking Through the Mekong. The transformational experience provided inspiration for their following albums, Dengue Fever EP, Escape from Dragon House, Sip Off the Mekong and Venus on Earth. A new album, Cannibal Courtship, was released in 2011. Music from the band has been featured in the soundtracks of the series Weeds, True Blood and Sanchez Get High, as well as the films City of Ghosts and Broken Flowers.
