Im Unterschied zu den meisten anderen Kryptowährungen, wie etwa Bitcoin, gibt es bei Ethereum die Möglichkeit, programmierbare und intelligente Verträge, Smart Contracts, sicher zu schließen. Es kann dadurch Notar-Dienstleistungen ersetzen und erweitern. Die Währungseinheit nennt sich Ether. Nachdem Buterin 2013 die Technologie allgemein beschrieben hatte, wurde diese Anfang 2014 von Gavin Wood formalisiert beschrieben und im Juli 2015 offiziell gestartet. Finanziert wurden die Kosten der Entwicklung von einer Ethereum-Bitcoin-Crowdfunding-Kampagne, in der die ersten erzeugten Ether gegen Bitcoin verkauft wurden, wobei insgesamt über 18 Millionen US-Dollar zusammenkamen. Der Wert aller Ethereum-Währungseinheiten beträgt 345 Millionen US-Dollar. Damit ist Ethereum die Kryptowährung mit der zweitgrößten Marktkapitalisierung nach Bitcoin.
