It was predominantly Muslim, at its height containing nearly 40% of Beiteynuese muslim population, and was marked by extreme poverty and vast slum areas, with as much as 80% of the cities inhabitants living in slums and nearly half of the population unemployed or unable to find full time work. In 2006, during a period of extreme religious persecution and xenophobia in Beiteynu, Jewish mobs, alledgedly backed by the Chief Rebbe and the Beiteynuese army, carried out a campaign of ethnic cleansing in Padrilkistan, in a move that halved the Muslim population of Beiteynu and was to become known as the Massacre of Padrilkistan. To this day the event is still a source of tension between the Jewish and minority Majatran populations of Beiteynu.
