AUS decided to have its festival outside of the main urban areas of Austarlia. The main AUS cultural organisers at the time were Johnny Allen, Graeme Dunstan and Paul Joseph, and they 'scouted' in northern New South Wales to find a suitable location. Since the Aquarius Festival, Nimbin has been best known as an alternative lifestyle centre of Australia, the hub of the Rainbow Region.

  • The Aquarius Festival was a ten-day music and cultural festival organised by the Australian Union of Students (AUS) in May, 1973. AUS decided to have its festival outside of the main urban areas of Austarlia. The main AUS cultural organisers at the time were Johnny Allen, Graeme Dunstan and Paul Joseph, and they 'scouted' in northern New South Wales to find a suitable location. The AUS representatives decided the rural village of Nimbin, NSW, Australia would be a good festival site, and negotiated with the Nimbin Progress Association with their plans for a countercultural festival to which thousands of students were expected to come. The event had a permanent effect on the economy of Nimbin, as many hippie festival participants decided to remain in the district which was previously a dairying region in severe decline. Since the Aquarius Festival, Nimbin has been best known as an alternative lifestyle centre of Australia, the hub of the Rainbow Region.
