John Smith was a British Labour Party politician who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and Leader of the Labour Party from 1989 until his death in 1994. He first entered cabinet in 1978 as Trade Secretary, then served as Employment Secretary (1982 - 1983) and Industry Secretary (1983 - 1984). In 1984 Trade and Industry ministries were merged, and Smith became Secretary of State for Trade and Industry. After the 1987 election he was made Chancellor of the Exchequer. Smith won the 1989 Labour Leadership election following the resignation of Denis Healey.

Smith won the 1989 Labour Leadership election following the resignation of Denis Healey. As Prime Minister he embarked on a programme of political reform, abolishing hereditary peers, devolving greater power to Scotland, Wales and the regions and signing the Maastricht Treaty. On May 12th 1994 he suffered a fatal heart attack. He was the first Prime Minister sicne Lord Palmerston to die in office. He was given a state funeral.
