He had previously served with him, and was chosen for his position because he had managed to impress the captain.

While on the bridge, Manning recognized the Masadans' intent to take over Thunder of God, and warned Captain Yu of the impending mutiny. On the captain's command, he shut down the ship's main systems before being shot dead by Lieutenant Hart, much to the regret of Sword of the Faithful Matthew Simonds. (HH2)
