Arai, or arae, are the daughters of Nyx, personification of Night. They are female spirits of curses, particularly those of placed by the dead upon those responsible for their death. Once an arai is cut down, their curse is released upon their killer. They are sometimes misidentified with the Erinyes, three female spirits of vengeance. The difference is that, unlike the arai, the Erinyes are controlled by Hades; while the arai are not.

- Arai first appears in Ep 15 - The Refreshing Battle in Karuizawa!, as a middle-school friend of Haruhi's. He's a pleasant-looking young man who is working a summer job in the resort town of Karuizawa as a delivery boy for his uncle's produce store. Through flashbacks and interactions with the hosts, it is seen that Arai is an intelligent, industrious, thoughtful and tolerant individual.
- Admiral Arai was a Romulan agent of the Tal Shiar that ordered a covert operation to capture the USS Incursion and make use of its holographic masking system for the Romulan Star Empire. After her failure in destroying the alliance between the Federation and Klingon Empire, Arai was branded as a traitorous rogue by Praetor Hiren, who declared that she was not acting on behalf of the Empire.
