| - 'Denial' Underland illus 06.jpg|While crossing the sea he met a huge caterpillar, rising from the waves. It asked him, "who are you?" Underland illus 07.jpg|"I'm Alfie. I serve in Her Majesty's army." "No," the caterpillar said. "That doesn't answer my question." Underland illus 08.jpg|Then the caterpillar became a monstrous thing, its wing tips touching each horizon, and left him. "who are you?" Alfie mused. 'Anger' Underland illus 09.jpg|After several moons. Alfie left the sea for shore, lined with dark woods. he saw a cottage at the line of the sand and decided to ask if the white rabbit had passed this way. Underland illus 10.jpg|In the yard a man in a tall hat was taking tea at a long table, gesturing for Alfie to join him. After he was seated, the hatter said, "you must be MAD to drink at this table." Underland illus 11.jpg|"A bit crazy, yes. I am a soldier." Alfie replied. "No," the hatter persisted, in a dark tone. "You must be very very MAD indeed." 'Bargaining' Underland illus 12.jpg|Put off his tea, Alfie left and wandered into the wood. For a long time he walked in black. He began to feel a pain in his chest. "I must be homesick." Underland illus 13.jpg|"What could you give to go home?" a voice called in the dark. From the shadows slunk a bony creature, a stretched and angled thing with a jagged grin. "Offter me a valuable thing and I can make it so." Underland illus 14.jpg|Alfie hesitated, prepared to offer a great many things. But then he thought of the lost white rabbit, and closed his mouth. "You will never find your way home," the thing purred through knitted teeth. 'Depression' Underland illus 15.jpg|Alfie managed through the wood and came upon a lavish courtyard, ornate banners flying. He passed to admire, but still felt the pain in his chest, and so strongly desired home then that he felt he might cry. Underland illus 16.jpg|He met the Queen and her court in the castle, which was, despite all it's grandure, a somber affair. "Did you know," the Queen murmured in a private moment. "The salt sea you crossed to find my land is made of my tears." Underland illus 17.jpg|"Whatever happened to make you cry so much, Majesty?" "Many people came to my land. Some I have hated, some I have loved. Many come, and all must eventually leave." 'Acceptance' Underland illus 18.jpg|Alfie does leave, after many days. He thinks of the sea, of home and tea, and the white rabbit. Underland illus 19.jpg|He came at last to the precipice where the night sky stretched away below him. The edge of the world. There, he met a thing with a name he already knew. Has always known. Underland illus 20a.jpg|"Do you know who you are?" the Jabberwock asks. Underland illus 21a.jpg|Alfie considers. He put a hand to his aching chest and it comes away red. He imagines a scent of gun powder and blood. Underland illus 22a.jpg|"Yes. Yes, I know." "I know who I am." Underland illus 23.jpg|"Grieve," the Jabberwock says. Underland illus 24.jpg|"Grieve, and then, move on." The end.
