The 1998 Pontiac Excitement 400 was a Winston Cup (now Nextel Cup) event held at Richmond International Raceway on June 6, 1998. Rusty Wallace and Jeff Gordon were having a fine duel for the lead when Wallace crashed Gordon with 37 laps to go. Damage to Wallace's car allowed Dale Jarrett to take the lead, who then in turn was passed by winner Terry Labonte with just a few laps to go. The wild finish was Labonte's only win of the year. Points leader Jeremy Mayfield was 6th and maintained a 25-point edge on Wallace (3rd). This was also the first race in which NASCAR used a red flag in the closing laps to try to insure a green flag finish. Stats
