La serie comenzó en 1991 con el juego Sonic the Hedgehog para la Sega Mega Drive y Genesis. Una versión de este mismo juego fue lanzado en versión de 8-bits para la Master System y los formatos de Game Gear. Sonic fue el responsable de hacer de la Sega la líder de la compañía de videojuegos durante la era de los juegos de 16-bits.
