Barnes' debut came during the 1971 season, when he competed at Talladega. Starting 47th in the field of fifty, Barnes burned up an oil pan early in the race and struggled to a 46th place finish. Despite his struggles, Barnes stepped his schedule up to eight races during the 1973 season, finishing a solid 39th in the final point standings. He faced largely mixed results, finishing in the top-twenty three times: a 15th at Charlotte, an 18th at Darlington, and a 19th at Atlanta. But those runs were mixed up with five DNFs, and during those races, Barnes finished no better than 27th at Talladega. This also included a 35th in the Southern 500, and a crash to 42nd at Rockingham. Barnes made his final four starts during the 1974 season, though it turned out to be a terrible season for the driver. Three engine failures and one crash prevented Barnes from running at the finish of any of his races. It was a tough year as a result, finishing 27th at Darlington, 47th at Talladega, 25th at Richmond, and ultimately 40th (last) at Dover.
