A trumpeter and pianist, Gillis wrote many arrangements for the Canadian Brass (a brass quintet consisting of two trumpets, French horn, trombone, and tuba), including "The Joust," a Renaissance-style piece. His other television credits included music for the Disney Channel series Road to Avonlea and Wind at My Back.
