- FreeBSD is a free computer operating system developed by devil worshippers in the 1950s as a Linux clone. Its goal is to provide users with levels of performance, reliability, and robustedness that are unmatched by other UNIX-like operating systems. It is currently run by Gandhi and his manical pack of hyperactive animals with rabies. Satan is also supposedly lending code for the FreeBSD project that he had developed for his servers running in Hell. Mac OS is a sexy clone of FreeBSD and is known to cause women to become promiscuous, ask Carl.

- rightMalgrado BSD (un diretto discendente di UNIX) non sia Linux (un clone di UNIX), i due sistemi operativi hanno molte cose in comune : sono libere in ogni senso, usano applicazioni open source in comune. FreeBSD ha avuto una lunga storia turbolenta che risale alla versione 1.0 che è stata rilasciata nel novembre del 1993. Il suo sviluppo si divide in due branche : stable(branca di produttività) e current (branca delle nuove tecnologie); questo può essere grossolanamente paragonato alle branche stable e unstable di Debian. Comunque, a differenza di Debian, gli sviluppatori di FreeBSD producono regolarmente release complete di entrambe le branche e l'estensione è "RELEASE". E' possibile quindi osservare la release 4.9-RELEASE e la 5.2-RELEASE, rilasciate a breve distanza l'una dall'altra,

Comunque FreeBSD ha una ottima reputazione di essere veloce, performante ed estremamente stabile come server. L'installazione non è difficile, comunque non più della installazione di Slackware Linux. Se provenite dal mondo Linux, sarete contenti di sapere che una vasta maggioranza delle applicazioni open source che conoscete e usate, possono essere usate con FreeBSD (X.Org, KDE, GNOME, Apache e alcuni software non liberi come i driver per acceleratori grafici NVIDIA o il browser Opera). Accanto ai pacchetti binari, FreeBSD ha una vasta collezione di "ports" che permettono all'utente di compilare facilmente tutti i pacchetti.
* Pro : Veloce e molto stabile, ha una eccellente documentazione, disponibilità dei "ports" per la compilazione di software locale e personalizzato.
* Contro : Tende ad essere arretrato rispetto a Linux nel supporto a nuovo hardware, limitata disponibilità di applicazioni commerciali.
