It is located on the outskirts of Barton Park, the estate owned by Sir John and Lady Middleton. Sir John graciously offered the use of Barton Cottage to his relative, Mrs. Dashwood, when he heard of her predicament. It did not fit the cottage idyll as the Dashwood women expected and wished for at first, and didn't have honeysuckle trailing up its side or quaint window shutters, but it did support the small family and was a good enough home. They realized quickly that any alterations would cut into their budget quite quickly.
