The games are playable on the Nintendo 3DS. Mars and Venus follow many of the trends set up by the previous games. Two player characters (one male and one female) travel the newly appearing region of Nanbu on their Pokémon journeys. The region is inhabitated by many different species of Pokémon and following the trend set up by Generation V, no Pokémon available prior to Generation VI can be found within the region before defeating the Pokémon League. Like previous games of the series, Neon and Argon are compatible with games of Generation V. Through use of the Exchange Outpost, players can transfer Pokémon as well as items from their Generation V games into Pokémon Neon and Argon. Pokémon and items from Generations III and IV can also be transferred into the Generation VI games through the games of Generation V.
