Crane tattoo was named for the crane, which was often seen as symbol of good fortune and longevity. It was said that a blessing from a crane would bring a samurai one thousand years of life, fortune and plenty. A monk with the crane tattoo became lucky, aged slowly and fatal wounds seemed to just barely not kill them.
