Synopsis
  • In the morgue, Dead Hand Legendre and his men arrive to collect the body of the Ugly Man. Using his amazing power, Legendre animates the Ugly Man, and is about to leave, when he is attacked by the Hangman. During the grapple, Legendre grabs the Hangman's noose, and the rope unravels, covering him in strands of rope while his mind beholds the World Gallows Tree, the source of his power. The many victims on the tree inform him that, if the rope around his neck is ever destroyed, he can be killed. Coming to, the Hangman is restrained by the Ugly Man. Legendre explains that he can draw energy from a living man to replenish himself, and pump his own energy into a corpse to create undead servants. He plans to drain the Hangman of his uncanny energy. Unfortunately, the Hangman is not truly alie, and Legendre's body regards him as a corpse. Legendre accidentally pours his energy into the Hangman, killing himself and temporarily crippling the Hangman. The three bodyguards decide to look under the Hangman's hood, but what they discover there is so shocking that they go into hysterics. At this point, the Hangman is roused by the voices. The Jackal has killed again...
  • In Scott's home in Greenwich, CN, Stunner's powers have done for the Web. This puzzles Deuces Wilde, whose Vyce-derived precognitive trances showed him very much alive. Shrugging off Wilde's viion as the result of quantum improbabilities. Scott takes a look at the Web without his mask, and it appears that his theory of who the Web is has been confirmed. Regardless, he sweeps the matter aside and commands his thugs to dispose of the body, but keep the suit. He moves on to his next piece of business: explaining to Deuces Wilde that the Global Concern does not pay its constituents - each member recieves a formula every week, which allows them to predict the stock market. While this is going on, KitCat, from the safety of the Web's HQ, activates a weapon that drains Stunner of the energy she took from the Web. Energised, the Werb makes short work of Wilde's bodyguard, then rounds on Martin Scott and decides to run a scenario by him - the president of a large insurance company is threatened by health care reform. A small percentage of his customers are horrendously expensive, but if he denies the claims altogheter his company will be sued out from under him. So he decides to kill these policy-holders. At this point, Stunner comes to, absorbs the energy of Swien's two underlings, and attacks the Web. In the following fight, Swien weighs in, and the Web uses her to knock out Swien, overloading her energy-absorbing powers and knocking her out too. Scott runs for his office, and the Web follows. At this point, the two men drop their pretences and admit that Scott knows the Web is secretly John Raymond. Scott reveals that his father helped make Advantage Health what it is. Raymond Sr. and Scott were both part of a mysterious group known as the Global Concern. Scott admits defeat, just as the Web accuses him of blackmail. Scott shrugs off his claims, saying that he never resorted to blackmail. He pulls out his phone and activates charges in his house's basement, destroying it and any evidence it contains to protect the Global Concern. The Web barely escapes. Over dinner, he informs Elizabeth that he has caught the people who killed her grandmother and gained some modicum of revenge. Then he hands her the blackmail money, having worked out that it was her who blackmailed him. She admits it immediately, and while John Raymond appears to agree with her, he also demads that she never speak to him again. Back at the HQ, the Web tells KitCat about his adventure. She responds by handing him her first invoice. He is aghast, but he accepts the scenario.
quotation
  • Oh, the variety of things people do for the money. Some work hard, and then overcharge. Some, on the other hand, will kill old people, or blackmail their ex-boyfriends. Me? I didn't do anything for my money. And the work that I've devoted my life to doesn't pay a dime. Never thought I'd hear myself say this, but I think I prefer it that way.
