Josh Gibson was a legendary Negro League baseball player in the 1940s. He played for the Homestead Grays. Fox Mulder was a fan of Gibson and owned a version of his Grays jersey. (TXF: "The Unnatural") Josh Gibson was referenced indirectly, when his Grays jersey, #20 - GIBSON, was worn by Mulder in the final scene of the episode, "The Unnatural." It is possible that the "Grays" referenced was intended to be the fictional Roswell Grays, with Gibson apparently playing for that team instead. Interestingly, Mulder asked if a baseball player named "Gibson" was an alien, and Arthur Dales replied, "Bob or Kirk?" disregarding the Baseball Hall of Famer entirely.

  • Josh Gibson was a male Human from Earth in the 20th century. He was famed as one of the best catchers and hitters in baseball history, though because of racial prejudice, was never allowed to play in the sport's major leagues. A glove used by Gibson when he played for the Homestead Grays in 1930 was displayed in the Pioneer Pub in Pike City on Cestus III in the 24th century. (ST novel: Articles of the Federation)
  • Standing 6-foot-1 and weighing 256 pounds at the peak of his career, Gibson is widely considered among the very best power hitters in baseball history, but never played in Major League Baseball as racial segregation excluded African-Americans during his lifetime. He is a member of the Baseball Hall of Fame, elected in 1972.
  • Josh Gibson was a negro league player and Hall of Famer.
