The East Coast Meerkat Society's first project took place at Staten Island Zoo in New York. The zoo at the time was home to three male meerkats who lived in a "far from ideal" enclosure. The ECMS volunteers worked with the zoo behind the scenes in creating a brand new and more suitable exhibit. The construction of the enclosure took six months to complete. The exhibit was opened to the public in September 2007. Around this time, news of Flower's passing was released. The ECMS and Staten Island Zoo decided to dedicate the new enclosure to Flower.
