Trolls are one of the five main Races depicted in Terry Brooks' Shannara series. Like the Dwarves, the Gnomes, and the Race of Man, Trolls are descended from humans who survived the Great Wars. Their natural home is the Northland, which is characterized by harsh, rugged terrain. (There are several types of Trolls, but Rock Trolls are the only one described in any substantive detail in the Shannara series, and "Troll" is often used as a general shorthand for Rock Troll.)

  • Trolls are large, sly, and generally nasty. The common northern hemisphere Troll is extremely sensitive to sunlight, so he lives in dark places and travels mainly at night. These are often known as Cave Trolls. The skin of a Troll is like heavy armor and resists damage from weapons and fire. Unfortunately, the common southern hemisphere Troll, while not as tough as his cousin, has a disgusting habit of rapid regeneration and can heal wounds almost as quickly as a Hero can make them. Fire prevents such regeneration. In general, it is always wise to know which hemisphere one is in when dealing with Trolls. The beard of a Troll is frequently used in making potions.

  • The Trolls are a street gang of drug addicts who have mutated through the abuse of a dangerous drug called Superadine. These mutations grant them superhuman strength and resistance, at the price of turning them into furious monsters. This low level villain group can be fought in City of Heores and City of Villains between levels 10 and 20, although it does not spawn in any zone in the Rogue Isles and is only available as part of missions.
  • Trolls are humanoid creatures that mostly live underground and work as miners. They are blinded by the sunlight and thus are very careful to stay out of it. However, not all trolls suffer from this vulnerability to the sun, as a few have been shown to withstand sunlight. Larger trolls seem to like living in holes under bridges. They are also very long lived, with one troll implying that he can live to be more than a thousand years old. In "The Fountain Of Smurf", the Smurfs encountered a giant troll who was the guardian of the Fountain Of Youth.
  • Trolls were a vile Race of Middle-Earth. Along with the Orcs, they were counted to the Uvanimor or Melkorindi - the creatures of Morgoth. They were made by the first Dark Lord in mockery of the Ents, though there was lot of debate as to how this had been done. One account suggested it was achieved by imprisoning evil (goblin-) spirits in bodies created of rocks, which would explain why some turned to stone in the daylight. Another suggested that Trolls were made from "primitive human-types"; since in Tolkien's legendarium, things usually become mere shadows of their ancestors with each generation, not greater, the sheer size, power, and general magic behind trolls could be explained by a possible descent from a mannish people similar to the ancestors of the Beornings or the Giants.
  • Trolls, which have lived on Etheria since the Preternian era, have always preferred to live in rocky sections of land. But relations between them and the human population have always been strained. At one point in history, the Trolls managed to defeat the giant Spider of Crystal who had been summoned from another planet by an evil wizard. When the wizard failed to control the Spider, it began running amok until the Trolls managed to trap it beneath a mountain of rock.
  • Trolls are the bane of travelers everywhere - a sentient race of brutes who achieve victory through surprise, firepower via thrown axes, and strength of numbers. Commonly encountered on bridges and lonely roads, trolls are capable of speech, as is evidenced in Ultima VII and both the Ultima Underworlds. In Ultima VII, the player may encounter and converse with an imprisoned troll in the jailhouse of Yew, as well as in the torture chambers below Buccaneer's Den. Trolls also hurl insults and threats (and sometimes rocks) at the player in Ultima VII whilst attacking.
  • In Random Kingdom, Trolls form the majority of the population of Muspelheim and seem to be exclusively members of the working class. Their oppression by the RvneTek led to the formation of a leftists terrorist group, the Mephi, led by Muspelheim's foreman Surt, which is however not entirely composed of trolls - Diane May is Human and joined them out of altruistic feelings. It might be that a substantial amount of non-troll members exist that simply aren't seen on-screen in source material, especially considering that not all of Muspelheim's workers are trolls - there are humans too. The trolls uprising against O'Dean's corporation is an interpretation of the Ragnarök myth redressed in modern political context, even though it's not the Mephi, but rather the unrelated actions taken by Zero t
  • Trolls are ancient creatures, one of the oldest known races known to inhabit the Great Continent. They are large, slow, simple-minded, and live extremely long lives inside deep caves or atop high mountains. The most unique characteristic of trolls is an internal vitality that sustains and heals them from within. As a result they live very different lives from almost any known creature. Trolls have few real needs: they require little food or water, and thus they have little incentive to pursue much besides protection from those who are hostile towards them. This in turn means they rarely have to worry about anything and can spend much of their time sleeping or in contemplation. Trolls have a curious affinity with nature. They do not relate with living things like elves do, but instead with

Suddenly, Vanellope spooks him, causing him to fall into the ground and end up covered in snow. She laughs because it's funny. Then, everyone else sees him, and Anna asks him why he hid on the tree. So, Jack Frost tells her, but Elsa says that he was going to meet the trolls. It makes him blush, then he gets hit by a snowball from Anna to snap him out. As they are off into the woods, they stop and hear a howling noise, so Kristoff goes to see what it is. He is about to go on a sleig
  • Trolls are generally considered to be of lower intellect than most other species. They certainly have some cognitive abilities, and are capable of using language and have some writing skills, but they consistently use very poor grammar, and grunts are very common in their communications. They also do not appear to have a deep understanding of the world around them. Some Swamp Trolls have even setup a shrine to a Football in their cave. A witch near Kazordoon is currently doing some research on breeding trolls, but it is unknown what purpose this will serve. See also Troll NPCs.
