| - Like Key Items, some materials are required to complete Quests. The include materials and key items which are needed for quest completion. After a certain point in the game, the Monado will sometimes show a vision when a material is collected. These materials will be needed for future quests, and are marked with a white exclamation mark on their icon. It is possible to trigger a vision for an item needed in a mutually-exclusive quest. If the party then chooses the alternate quest, the vision never comes to pass and the item will remain marked with the white exclamation mark for the remainder of the game. Unlike key items, materials can be collected before a quest is triggered and after it is completed. Additionally, most materials are not limited in quantity like key items are. Further, materials are never found in the environment as some key items are. Materials are available in two rarities: common and rare. Both rarities are available in wooden Treasure Chests, however common materials appear much more frequently in wooden chests, while rare materials appear most frequently in silver chests. Most enemies can drop two different materials. Most normal enemies drop one common material and one rare material. Most Unique Monsters drop two rare materials, one of which is a glyph. Quest-exclusive enemies often only drop a single type of material, usually a rare material. There are many more materials available in the game than there are inventory slots for materials, so eventually old materials will need to be sold to make room for new ones. When the inventory is full, a "no" sign will appear over the material icon. Common materials are less often required for quests, and are thus a safer choice to sell or drop when freeing up inventory space. Materials are worth money when sold at shops. This can provide a helpful early boost in gold, but eventually selling materials becomes unnecessary as quest rewards become so generous that the party can easily afford to buy anything they need. Materials remain valuable for trading until nearly the end of the game.
