In 1936, he spent a summer in France, during which he met and fell in love with Brigitte. They had seen I'm No Angel starring Mae West in the cinema before Bobby returned to America. He returned to Sainte Claire as a lieutenant in the US 29th Infantry Division under Captain Miller on September 25, 1944 where he was reunited with a now pregnant Brigitte, who had joined the French Resistance.
