abstract
  • The United States presidential election of 1972 was the 48th quadrennial United States presidential election. It was held on November 7, 1972. The Democratic Party's nomination was eventually won by Senator Edmund Muskie, the party's Vice-presidential nominee in 1968, who ran an anti-war campaign against incumbent Republican President Richard Nixon, but was defeated. Emphasizing a good economy and his successes in foreign affairs (especially ending American involvement in Vietnam and establishing relations with China), Nixon was re-elected in a landslide, with 55% of the popular vote and 428 electoral college votes. Muskie maintained a base of support from electoral votes of North Eastern and Midwestern states, as well as Washington.
