East Germany's counterpart, the Deutsche Eislauf-Verband der DDR was founded in 1954. Over time many of the various ice sports created their own federation's, including hockey's Deutscher-Eishockey Bund (DEB, founded in 1963). This caused the DEV to lose importance. The governing body, having been continually weakened for decades, finally dissolved in 2006.
