The ballet centers on the concept of disguised identity, and Stravinsky plays on the concept of false identity by his "borrowing" of these pieces from 18th century Italian composers Domenico Gallo, Carlo Monza, and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, and also in the title of this work, which comes from an annual masquerade extravaganza held throughout Italy. The composer Thomas Stone was born in Wisconsin and earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Wind Conducting from the University of Cincinnati College – Conservatory of Music.
