| abstract
| - The United States presidential election of 2012 was the 58th presidential election. It was held on Tuesday, November 8, 2016. The Republican nominee and his running mate, Vice President Mike Pence, were elected , defeating the Democratic nominee, former Governor of Massachusetts Hillary Clinton and her running mate, Representative Tim Kaine. Trump secured the Republican nomination in a landslide, much attributed to the 11/7 Attacks the day prior. The Democratic Party was left fractured after the election, declining from prominence after the 2016 election due to a lack of change and segmentation. The Republican Party changed much of its platform as the party took on a new shape of Populist Politics, non interventionism and Protectionism that shaped the party for the ensuing decades. The controversial nature of the election along with the decline of the Democratic Party and former American Political establishment is also credited towards the emergence of the Libertarian party which experienced it's first break through in the 2020 election, receiving more than 16% of the vote.
